Mastering the Pick and Roll: High Screen Execution Drill

Equipment Needed

2 basketballs
4 cones (optional)

1. Overview

The high pick and roll is the most lethal weapon in modern basketball. This drill breaks down the mechanics of the high screen, teaching the screener how to set a solid, legal screen and the ball handler how to use it effectively to create an advantage. It progresses from 2-on-0 to 2-on-2, ensuring players understand the reads and reactions required in game situations. Use this drill to build chemistry between your guards and bigs, and to improve overall half-court offensive efficiency.

2. Setup

  • Court Area: Half court (FIBA regulation 28m x 15m).
  • Equipment: 2 basketballs, 4 cones (optional, for spacing reference).
  • Players: Minimum of 4 players (1 ball handler, 1 screener, 2 defenders). Can be run with up to 12 players rotating.
  • Positions:
    • Player 1 (Point Guard): Starts at the top of the key with the ball.
    • Player 5 (Center/Forward): Starts at the high post/elbow area.
    • X1 & X5 (Defenders): Positioned guarding Player 1 and Player 5 respectively.

3. Step-by-Step Instructions

Phase 1: Screen Setup (2-on-0)

Tactical diagram 1

  1. Initiation: Player 1 starts with the ball at the top of the three-point arc. Player 5 starts at the elbow.
  2. The Setup Dribble: Player 1 takes a hard setup dribble away from the intended screen direction to shift the imaginary defender.
  3. Setting the Screen: Player 5 sprints to set a screen on the imaginary X1 defender. The screen should be set just outside the three-point line. Player 5 must establish a wide base, stationary position, and protect their core.
  4. Using the Screen: Player 1 aggressively drives off Player 5's shoulder, leaving no gap for a defender to slide through.

Phase 2: Roll & Read (2-on-2 Live)

Tactical diagram 2

  1. Live Action: Introduce defenders X1 and X5. Player 1 and Player 5 execute the pick and roll.
  2. The Roll: After Player 1 clears the screen, Player 5 pivots and rolls hard to the basket, maintaining vision on the ball handler.
  3. The Read: Player 1 must read the defense (specifically X5):
    • If X5 drops or stays attached to Player 5, Player 1 attacks the rim or pulls up for a jump shot.
    • If X5 steps up to stop the ball (hedge/switch), Player 1 delivers a crisp pass to Player 5 rolling to the basket.
    • If a third defender pulls in from the corner, Player 1 kicks out to the open shooter (Player 3).
  4. Finish: The drill ends with a shot attempt, followed by rebounding and resetting.

4. Key Coaching Points

  • Shoulder-to-Shoulder: The ball handler must come off the screen rubbing shoulders with the screener to prevent the defender from fighting over.
  • Patience is Key: The ball handler must wait for the screen to be fully set before attacking. Leaving early results in an offensive foul or a blown play.
  • Wide Base: The screener must have a wide, balanced stance. A narrow stance leads to weak screens and moving screen violations.
  • Hard Roll: The screener must roll aggressively to the rim immediately after the ball handler clears, forcing the defense to make a decision.
  • Eyes Up: The ball handler must keep their eyes up while coming off the screen to read the defensive coverage and locate the open man.

5. Common Mistakes

  • Leaving Early: Ball handler attacks before the screener is set, allowing the defender to easily slip under or over.
  • Soft Screens: Screener doesn't establish a strong base or shies away from contact, rendering the screen ineffective.
  • Rolling Blind: Screener rolls to the basket but loses sight of the ball, missing an easy pass.
  • Lack of Setup: Ball handler fails to use a setup dribble, making it easy for the defender to anticipate the screen direction.

6. Variations & Progressions

  • Pick and Pop: Instead of rolling to the basket, Player 5 pops out to the perimeter for a jump shot.
  • Add Corner Shooters (3-on-3 / 4-on-4): Place offensive players in the corners to simulate game-like spacing and force the ball handler to read help defense.
  • Defensive Constraints: Force the defense to play specific coverages (e.g., hard hedge, switch, drop) so the offense can practice the appropriate reads.

7. Age Adaptations

  • Under 10/12: Focus heavily on the 2-on-0 mechanics. Emphasize the setup dribble, setting a stationary screen, and using the screen shoulder-to-shoulder. Do not introduce complex defensive reads.
  • Under 14: Introduce 2-on-2 with basic defensive coverages (drop coverage). Focus on the timing of the roll and the basic pass vs. shoot read.
  • Under 16/Open: Run live 3-on-3 or 4-on-4 scenarios. Demand quick reads against advanced defensive coverages like hard hedging, trapping, and switching.
