Elite Slip Catching & Reaction Drill

Equipment Needed

15-20 cricket balls
Katchet ramp or slip cradle (optional)
Stumps
Wicketkeeping gloves and pads

1. Overview

The slip cordon is arguably the most critical catching area on a cricket field. Matches are frequently won or lost based on the chances taken or dropped behind the wicket. The Elite Slip Catching & Reaction Drill is designed to simulate the fast-paced, unpredictable nature of edge catching. It forces fielders to stay low, react instantly to deflections, and develop the soft hands required to secure fast-moving catches. This drill is perfect for transitioning players from static catching to match-like dynamic scenarios.

2. Setup

Tactical diagram

Equipment Needed:

  • 15-20 cricket balls (use a mix of new and slightly older balls for varied bounce).
  • 1 Katchet ramp or a slip cradle (optional, but highly recommended for realistic deflections).
  • Stumps (1 set for the batting end).
  • Wicketkeeping gloves and pads (for the WK).

Pitch/Field Setup & Player Positions:

  • Set up on the edge of the square or on a dedicated grass practice wicket (22 yards).
  • Place the stumps at the batting end.
  • Wicketkeeper (WK): Positioned 1 to 1.5 metres behind the stumps, depending on the simulated pace of the bowler.
  • 1st Slip (1S): Positioned approximately 1.5 metres to the right (for a right-handed batter) of the WK, staggered slightly deeper.
  • 2nd Slip (2S): Positioned 1.5 metres to the right of 1st slip, staggered slightly deeper again.
  • 3rd Slip (3S) / Gully (GU): Depending on the focus, place a 3rd slip or a gully fielder further out at a 45-degree angle.

3. Step-by-Step Instructions

Tactical diagram

Phase 1: The Feeder Setup (Close Range)

  1. The coach/feeder stands 4-5 metres away from the slip cordon, directly in front of them (simulating the batter's position).
  2. The fielders get into their ready positions: feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent, weight slightly forward on the balls of the feet, and hands resting lightly on the knees or hanging relaxed in front.
  3. The coach throws the ball firmly towards the fielders. Initially, target specific fielders to build rhythm, then randomize the throws to test reaction times.
  4. Fielders must track the ball from the coach's hand, react laterally, and catch the ball with soft hands, giving with the impact.
  5. After each catch, the fielder rolls the ball back to the coach's bucket and the players rotate positions (WK to 1S, 1S to 2S, 2S to 3S, 3S to WK) to experience different angles.

Phase 2: Live Edge Progression

  1. Move the drill to a full pitch setup. A coach or bowler delivers the ball from the bowling crease.
  2. A batter (or coach with a bat) stands at the crease. The batter intentionally edges the ball into the slip cordon.
  3. Fielders must now read the line of the ball from the bowler's hand, anticipate the edge, and react to the true deflection off the bat.
  4. The coach can vary the pace and bounce of the deliveries to challenge the cordon's adaptability.

4. Key Coaching Points

Tactical diagram

  • Posture is Paramount: Keep the base wide and the center of gravity low. Fielders should 'stay down' until they are sure the ball is going over their heads. Standing up too early is the enemy of slip catching.
  • Soft Hands: Emphasize 'giving' with the ball. Fielders should catch the ball close to their body, letting their hands absorb the pace rather than snatching at it.
  • Watch the Ball, Not the Bat: Train the eyes to track the ball from the bowler's hand to the bat, and then follow the deflection. Anticipating the edge before it happens leads to false movements.
  • Staggered Alignment: Ensure the slips are correctly staggered. 1st slip should be slightly deeper than the WK, 2nd slip deeper than 1st, to prevent fielders from diving into each other.
  • Weight Transfer: Weight should be on the balls of the feet, allowing for explosive lateral movement. Flat-footed fielders will struggle to reach wide edges.

5. Common Mistakes

Tactical diagram

  • Rising Early: Fielders straightening their legs before the ball is hit, making it impossible to catch low edges.
  • Snatching at the Ball: Pushing hands out rigidly towards the ball, causing it to bounce out of the palms.
  • Poor Spacing: Standing too close together, leading to collisions or confusion over whose catch it is.
  • Taking the Eye Off: Looking away at the last millisecond, resulting in the ball hitting the wrists or chest.

6. Variations & Progressions

Tactical diagram

  • The Katchet Board: Introduce a Katchet board or slip cradle to create unpredictable, sharp deflections. This drastically improves reaction times.
  • One-Handed Focus: Have fielders hold a tennis ball in their non-dominant hand and practice catching edges one-handed with their dominant hand. This builds hand-eye coordination and confidence in diving catches.
  • Blind Start: Fielders face away from the coach and turn around only when the coach yells 'Go!' right before throwing the ball. This forces immediate, instinctive reactions.

7. Age Adaptations

Tactical diagram

  • Under 10s: Use incrediballs or tennis balls to remove the fear of impact. Focus heavily on the basic ready stance and two-handed catching technique. Keep throws gentle and predictable.
  • Under 12s - Under 14s: Transition to hard balls but keep the pace manageable. Introduce the Katchet board on a low setting. Focus on lateral movement and soft hands.
  • Under 16s - Open: Full match intensity. Use new balls for extra pace and carry. Emphasize diving catches, one-handed saves, and immediate reaction to fast edges.
