The Decoy & Deliver: Advanced Attacking Free Kick Play

1. Overview

The "Decoy & Deliver" is an advanced attacking free kick routine designed to manipulate the defensive wall and exploit the spaces left behind. By utilizing multiple decoy runners and a delayed delivery, this set play creates confusion among defenders, disrupts their marking assignments, and isolates key attackers in dangerous areas. This routine is highly effective against organized defenses that rely on a rigid wall structure and man-to-man marking in the penalty area. It requires precise timing, clear communication, and excellent technical execution from the primary kicker and the decoy runners.

2. Setup

Equipment Needed:

  • 1 Football
  • Cones (for practice setup to mark the wall and target areas)
  • Bibs (to differentiate attackers and defenders during practice)

Pitch Setup:

  • The play is initiated from a central or slightly wide position, approximately 20-25 meters from the goal line.
  • The defensive wall should be positioned exactly 9.15 meters from the ball.

Player Positions:

  • Player 7 (Primary Kicker): Positioned directly behind the ball, ready to deliver the final cross or shot.
  • Player 10 (Decoy 1 / Short Option): Positioned 2-3 meters to the side of the ball, acting as the initial decoy or a short passing option.
  • Player 9 (Near Post Runner): Positioned centrally in the penalty area, tasked with making an aggressive run towards the near post.
  • Player 11 (Far Post Runner): Positioned on the opposite side of the penalty area, tasked with making a late run towards the far post.
  • Player 8 (Second Phase / Edge of Box): Positioned at the top of the penalty arc, ready to collect rebounds or recycle possession.

3. Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. The Setup: Player 7 and Player 10 stand over the ball, communicating the chosen variation through pre-agreed signals (e.g., raising a specific hand or tapping a specific leg). The attacking players in the box (9, 11, 8) establish their starting positions, ensuring they are not offside.
  2. The Decoy Run: On the signal, Player 10 initiates the play by making a sharp, aggressive run over the ball, simulating a direct shot. This run must be convincing to force the defensive wall to jump or shift, creating gaps in their structure.
  3. The Primary Runs: As Player 10 runs over the ball, Player 9 begins a curved run towards the near post, aiming to drag a central defender with them. Simultaneously, Player 11 starts a looping run towards the far post, anticipating the delivery.
  4. The Delivery: Player 7, having waited for the wall to react to Player 10's decoy run, steps up and delivers the ball. The primary target is the space created by the shifting wall or the areas attacked by Players 9 and 11. The delivery can be a curled cross over the wall (Option A) or a driven pass around the wall (Option B).
  5. The Second Phase: If the initial delivery is cleared, Player 8 is positioned at the edge of the box to win the second ball, either shooting immediately or recycling possession to sustain the attack.

4. Key Coaching Points

  • Convincing Decoys: The success of this play hinges entirely on the believability of Player 10's decoy run. They must approach the ball with the same intensity and body shape as if they were actually shooting.
  • Timing of Runs: The runs by Players 9 and 11 must be perfectly synchronized with the delivery. Arriving too early results in an offside call or allows defenders to recover; arriving too late means missing the opportunity.
  • Quality of Delivery: Player 7 must possess excellent technique to deliver the ball accurately under pressure. The weight and trajectory of the pass are crucial to exploiting the created spaces.
  • Communication: Clear, subtle signals are essential to ensure all players are on the same page regarding which variation is being executed.
  • Second Ball Anticipation: Player 8 must be proactive in anticipating where the ball might fall if the initial delivery is cleared, ensuring the team maintains pressure.

5. Common Mistakes

  • Weak Decoy Runs: If Player 10 merely jogs over the ball, the wall will not react, and the play will fail to create the necessary gaps.
  • Poor Timing: Attackers making their runs before the ball is kicked, leading to offside decisions or allowing the defense to adjust.
  • Inaccurate Delivery: A poorly executed cross or pass by Player 7 that fails to reach the intended target or hits the defensive wall.
  • Lack of Second Phase Preparation: Players standing still after the initial delivery, failing to react to rebounds or clearances.

6. Variations & Progressions

  • The Short Combination (Option C): Instead of a direct delivery, Player 7 plays a short, quick pass to Player 10, who has continued their run past the wall. Player 10 then drives towards the goal line and delivers a cut-back cross to incoming attackers.
  • The Lay-Off: Player 10 runs over the ball, and Player 7 gently lays the ball off to the side for Player 8, who has made a late run from deep, to strike a powerful first-time shot.

7. Age Adaptations

  • Under 8 - Under 10: Focus on basic direct free kicks. Introduce simple concepts like having one player stand near the ball to cause confusion, but avoid complex multi-player routines. Emphasize striking technique.
  • Under 12 - Under 14: Introduce the concept of a single decoy runner (like Player 10) and basic near/far post runs. Focus on the timing of the runs relative to the kicker's approach.
  • Under 16 - Open: Implement the full routine with multiple variations. Focus on the intricate details of timing, communication, and exploiting specific weaknesses in the opponent's defensive setup.
