Channel Squeeze & 1v1 Close Marking Pressure Drill

Equipment Needed

1 netball
Bibs (two contrasting colours)
Flat markers (optional)

1. Overview

This high-intensity defensive drill focuses on teaching players to apply suffocating 1v1 marking pressure and then work together as a unit to close passing channels. By mastering the legal 0.9m distance and understanding how to force the attacking side into predictable, high passes, your defensive unit will secure more clean intercepts. It is best used mid-season when players need to sharpen their anticipation and unit cohesion against structured attacking plays.

2. Setup

  • Equipment Needed: 1 netball, bibs for two teams, optional flat markers to define the defensive channel.
  • Court Setup: Use the full 30.5m x 15.25m court, focusing the action between the defensive third and the centre third.
  • Player Positions: 1 Feeder (Centre/C), 2 Attackers (WA, GA), and 3 Defenders (WD, GD, GK).

3. Step-by-Step Instructions

Phase 1: 1v1 Close Marking Pressure

  1. The Centre (C) starts with the ball just outside the defensive third line.
  2. The WA leads strongly, attempting to create a clear passing lane.
  3. The WD must track the WA's movement, arriving balanced and instantly establishing a legal 0.9m mark with arms high to contest the vision of the feeder.
  4. The GD drops into a support position, reading the play and sitting in the next available passing lane.

Phase 2: Channel Squeeze and Intercept

  1. As the play progresses toward the goal circle, the WD forces the ball carrier to play a high or wide pass.
  2. The GD and GK communicate to squeeze the primary passing channel into the circle.
  3. The first defender (e.g., GD) contests the immediate space, while the second defender (GK) hunts the intercept off the forced high ball.
  4. Upon securing the intercept, the defender must turn early and immediately look for the safe outlet pass to clear the defensive third.

4. Key Coaching Points

  • Arrive Balanced: Defenders must chop their feet and establish a strong base before the attacker receives the ball. Lunging leads to contact penalties.
  • Respect the 0.9m: Emphasise measuring the 0.9m distance from the grounded foot of the player with the ball to the nearest foot of the defender.
  • Vision and Voice: The defensive pair (GD and GK) must constantly talk. The back defender sees the whole court and should direct the squeeze.
  • Hunt the Intercept: Do not just tip the ball; attack it with two hands at the highest point.

5. Common Mistakes

  • Breaking the Distance: Creeping closer than 0.9m before the ball is released, resulting in obstruction.
  • Flat Feet: Standing flat-footed while marking, making it impossible to react when the attacker changes direction.
  • Ball Watching: Defenders staring only at the ball and losing track of their opposing player's movement in the channel.

6. Variations & Progressions

  • Progression 1 (Overload): Add an extra attacker (GS) in the circle to force the GD and GK to make quicker decisions on when to leave their direct opponent to hunt the intercept.
  • Progression 2 (Time Limit): Give the attackers only 3 seconds to release the ball, increasing the urgency of the defensive squeeze.
  • Variation (Confined Space): Use flat markers to narrow the playing channel, forcing the attackers to play through the congested middle where the defenders have the advantage.

7. Age Adaptations

  • Under 10s / Under 12s: Focus purely on Phase 1. Reward players simply for arriving balanced and getting their arms up without making contact.
  • Under 14s: Introduce the channel squeeze concept, but allow the intercepting defender to start slightly out of position so they experience success reading the flight of the ball.
  • Under 16s & Open: Run the full drill at match intensity. Demand rapid transitions from defense into attack immediately after the intercept is secured.
