The shape

Four defenders form a box: two at the elbows, two on the blocks. The fifth has no area, only a person, and face-guards the opponent's best scorer all over the floor, denying every catch. The box slides toward the ball like a shrunken zone: the elbows pressure the ball up top, the blocks step to the corners, and the opposite players sag into the key. The chaser never helps and never switches.

Roles

  • The chaser. Your best and fittest defender. Faces the scorer, not the ball, denies the catch with a hand in the lane and a body in the path, and fights through every screen.
  • The two at the elbows. Pressure the ball at the top and on the wings, sink to the high post when the ball is on the far side, and call the screens aimed at the chaser.
  • The two on the blocks. Guard the low post and the corners, rebound, and bump the scorer's cut through the paint so the chaser can recover.

Strengths

  • Takes one player out of the game when the opponent has only one.
  • Frustrates a scorer used to touches and tempts them into forcing plays.
  • The box keeps rebounders near the basket.
  • Cheap to install for a single fixture.

Weaknesses

  • Four defenders against four attackers leaves the wings and corners open to shooters.
  • A scorer who screens and cuts well drags the chaser through traffic until they tire or foul.
  • If the chaser is beaten, nobody rotates to cover.
  • Zero development value: a tactic, not a teaching defence.

When to use it

Bring it out when one opponent has scored most of their team's points against you and the other four are reluctant shooters. Use it for a few minutes to break their rhythm, then return to man-to-man before the others gain confidence. Stick to the older age groups and only where your league permits zone defences, because the box is a zone and will be called as one.

What to coach in training

  1. Face-guard denial 1v1 without the ball: the chaser denies a cutter for 20 seconds while a passer tries to feed them from anywhere, then add a screener.
  2. Box slides 4-on-4: four passers move the ball round the perimeter and the box shifts together, freezing to check who has the high post.
  3. 5v5 half court with the scorer not allowed to shoot, so the box learns it must guard the other four as well.

Works well against

At its best against a 1-4-high or isolation offence built around one scorer, and against a 4-out-1-in where the one in is their star post, because the box collapses on the block while the chaser denies the entry. It falls apart against a 5-out team with four shooters, and against a motion offence where the scorer screens for others.
