The shape

A single sweeper stands in front of the penalty area with nobody beside them. Two midfielders play as a pair, usually one left and one right rather than one deep and one high. Three forwards stretch the pitch, the wide forwards on the touchline and the centre forward high. With the ball it is a 1-2-3 at full stretch. Without it the wide forwards should drop to make a 1-4-1 and the midfielders tuck in front of the sweeper. It only works when that drop happens.

Roles

  • Goalkeeper. Acts as a second defender. Plays high off the line, claims through balls and sweeps anything behind the single defender.
  • Centre Back. Covers the whole width alone, so stays central and delays rather than tackles. Passes forward early to a midfielder or wide forward.
  • Midfielders. Work as a pair and share the pitch left and right. They win the ball back high up and feed the forwards quickly.
  • Wide Forwards. Stay wide to stretch the defenders and come back as soon as the ball is lost. They make most of the team's tackles in the opposition half.
  • Centre Forward. Presses the goalkeeper and centre back on every goal kick and finishes chances. Stays central to keep the opposition defenders busy.

Strengths

  • More shots and more goals than any other 7v7 shape.
  • Pressing with five players makes it hard for the opposition to build.
  • Wide forwards learn to attack 1v1 and defend 1v1 in the same game.

Weaknesses

  • One defender and a keeper against any counter-attack.
  • A single long kick undoes all the pressing.
  • Forwards who stay high leave a 1-2 at the back.

When to use it

Use it when your team is clearly stronger and you want to teach the press as a unit, or for a short spell in a game you need to change. Keep the spells short, rotate who plays sweeper, and switch to 2-3-1 or 2-2-2 as soon as the opposition start going long. Never use it to run up a score.

What to coach in training

  1. Play 5v3 plus keeper where the five must win the ball in the opposition half to score. It teaches pressing as a group.
  2. Run a recovery exercise for the wide forwards: a ball is played past them to a server and they must sprint back to a cone before the server can score.
  3. Set up a 1v2 plus keeper for the sweeper, who must delay and show the attackers wide while the keeper comes to help.

Works well against

It overwhelms 3-2-1 and 3-1-2 when the press is on, because their three defenders have few outlets and the midfield pair wins the second ball. Against 2-1-3 it is a goal fest. It is poor against 2-3-1 and 1-3-2, where three midfielders find space behind your forwards and the sweeper is exposed every time.
