The shape

A back four, one holding midfielder directly in front of them, a line of four across midfield and a lone striker. Without the ball it is two compact banks with a sweeper between them. With it the wide midfielders push on and the two central midfielders break beyond the striker, so the attacking shape looks like a 4-3-3 anchored by the holder.

Roles

  • Goalkeeper. Plays short to the centre backs and the holder, or long to the striker when the press is on.
  • Full Backs. Hold a back four when defending. Overlap or underlap the wide midfielder when the ball is on their side.
  • Centre Backs. Comfortable on the ball with a holder in front. One steps to the striker, the other and the holder cover.
  • Holding Midfielder. Screens the centre backs, collects the second ball and plays forward quickly. Rarely goes past the ball.
  • Central Midfielders. Two box-to-box players who press, win the ball and run beyond the striker. The main source of goals from midfield.
  • Wide Midfielders. Defend as part of the four, then push on as wingers and deliver for the arriving central midfielders.
  • Striker. Works the line of their centre backs, holds the ball up and brings the runners in. Screens their holding midfielder when defending.

Strengths

  • The holder plugs the space in front of the back four that a flat 4-4-2 leaves open.
  • Two central midfielders are free to attack because the holder stays.
  • Compact and hard to play through, but with more attacking runners than a 4-5-1.
  • A natural shape for a team whose best players are central midfielders.

Weaknesses

  • The striker can be isolated if the central midfielders are slow to join him.
  • The holder is exposed if both central midfielders go at once.
  • Wide midfielders need to track back or the full-backs are left alone.
  • Youngsters may read the shape as defensive and stop attacking.

When to use it

Pick it when you have a disciplined player who enjoys the holding role and two energetic midfielders who want to score. It suits a narrow pitch and a game where you expect less of the ball but want to counter with numbers. Good from under 14s up, when players understand when to stay and when to go, and against a physical side playing long, because the holder is there for the second ball.

What to coach in training

  1. Second ball drill: the coach plays long balls into a 20 by 20 square where the holder and two centre backs compete with two attackers, and the holder must play the knockdown forward in two touches.
  2. Runner release: a 6v5 on half a pitch where the striker receives with his back to goal and both central midfielders must be past him within five seconds. Goals from a midfield runner count double.
  3. Pressing rehearsal: the striker and central midfielders press a back four and holder on the trigger of a sideways pass between centre backs, with the wide midfielders tucking in to block the full-backs.

Works well against

It handles a 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-1-2 well because the holder sits on the number 10 and the two central midfielders match their pivots, and it is good against a 4-4-2 because the holder is an extra man in the middle. It is weaker against a 3-5-2 whose wing-backs push the wide midfielders back, so against that let one full-back step up to help.
