Elite Wicket-Keeping Agility & Lateral Movement Drill

Equipment Needed

1 set of stumps
3-5 marker cones
6-12 cricket balls
Wicket-keeping gloves
Wicket-keeping pads
Helmet

Overview

In the modern game of Cricket, a wicket-keeper's agility is arguably their most vital physical attribute. The ability to move laterally with explosive speed while maintaining perfect balance and head position separates good keepers from elite ones. This drill is specifically designed to enhance a wicket-keeper's lateral movement, quick feet, and reaction times when taking balls down the leg side or reaching for wide deliveries on the off side.

This high-intensity drill focuses on the mechanics of the side-step and the dive, ensuring that the keeper stays low, keeps their head still, and watches the ball right into the gloves. It is an excellent conditioning and technical drill to use during the pre-season or as a focused activation exercise before a fielding session.

Setup

Tactical diagram

To run this drill effectively, you will need the following equipment and field setup:

  • Equipment: 1 set of stumps, 3–5 colored marker cones, 6–12 cricket balls (or incrediballs for younger age groups), and full wicket-keeping gear (pads, gloves, box, helmet).
  • Pitch Setup: Utilize a standard 22-yard cricket pitch or a flat, grassy area of similar dimensions. Place the stumps at one end.
  • Player Positions: The Wicket-Keeper (WK) assumes their standard crouching position directly behind the stumps. The Feeder (F) or Coach stands approximately 3 to 5 metres away, typically at a 45-degree angle to the stumps on either the off side or leg side, depending on the variation being run.

The Basic Lateral Shuffle Setup

Place three marker cones in a triangle formation approximately 1 metre behind the stumps. The base of the triangle should run parallel to the popping crease, with the cones spaced about 1 metre apart to define the lateral movement zone.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Tactical diagram

Follow these steps to execute the drill with precision:

  1. Assume the Ready Position: The wicket-keeper starts in a balanced, low crouch directly behind the stumps, eyes locked on the feeder.
  2. Initiate Movement: On the feeder's call or arm movement, the keeper performs a rapid lateral shuffle to the left (leg side for a right-handed batter) towards the outside cone.
  3. The Delivery: As the keeper moves, the feeder throws a firm underarm or gentle overarm delivery targeting the area just outside the cone.
  4. Take and Recover: The keeper must gather the ball cleanly, ensuring their head is over the ball and their weight is transferred smoothly. Immediately after gathering, the keeper underarms the ball back to the feeder and quickly shuffles back to the central starting position.
  5. Alternate Sides: The feeder then initiates the same sequence towards the right (off side) cone. Repeat this sequence for sets of 6 to 10 deliveries.

Advanced Multi-Station Setup

For advanced keepers, introduce a multi-station arc to test continuous movement and diving ability.

Key Coaching Points

Tactical diagram

When running this drill, focus on these critical technical aspects:

  • Stay Low: The keeper must maintain a low center of gravity throughout the lateral shuffle. Popping up wastes time and ruins balance.
  • Head Position: The head must remain still and level. The eyes should track the ball continuously from the feeder's hand into the gloves.
  • Footwork over Reaching: Emphasize moving the feet to get the body behind the ball rather than simply reaching out with the hands. The first movement should be a sharp, precise step with the lead foot.
  • Soft Hands: Ensure the keeper is 'giving' with the ball upon impact, bringing the ball into the body to secure the catch, rather than snatching at it.

Common Mistakes

Tactical diagram

Watch out for these frequent errors and correct them immediately:

  • Crossing the Legs: Keepers should use a side-step (shuffle) rather than crossing their feet, which can lead to tripping and loss of balance.
  • Rising Up Early: Standing up before the ball has reached the gloves is a classic error that leads to missed chances, especially on low bouncing deliveries.
  • Hard Hands: Snatching at the ball instead of letting it hit the gloves softly often results in the ball popping out.

Variations & Progressions

Tactical diagram

Keep the drill challenging and engaging with these modifications:

  • Introduce Deflections: Use a slip cradle, a deflection ramp, or simply have a player stand in front of the keeper with a bat to create unpredictable deflections.
  • Blind Start: Have the keeper face away from the feeder and turn only when the feeder shouts 'Go!', drastically reducing reaction time.
  • The Dive: Widen the cones to 2 metres apart, forcing the keeper to execute a full-stretch dive to reach the ball instead of a shuffle.

Age Adaptations

Tactical diagram

Tailor the drill to suit the developmental stage of your players:

  • Under 10s: Use softer balls (tennis balls or incrediballs). Reduce the distance of the lateral movement to focus purely on the fundamental side-step technique and catching with two hands.
  • Under 14s: Introduce a cricket ball. Increase the speed of the feed and insist on perfect footwork. Begin introducing the concept of diving safely.
  • Under 16s & Open: Use a high-paced feed, introduce deflections, and demand match-intensity movement. Focus on the speed of recovery after a dive to prepare for a potential run-out opportunity.
