Equipment Needed

1 Full-size goal with net
10-15 Footballs
4 Cones or markers

1. Overview

The Elite Goalkeeper Shot-Stopping and Recovery Drill is designed to replicate the chaotic, high-pressure environment of the penalty area during a match. This drill focuses on developing a goalkeeper's primary shot-stopping ability, emphasizing quick footwork, immediate recovery after a save, and the physical endurance required to handle multiple consecutive efforts on goal. It is an essential session for preparing your number one for game-day scenarios where secondary chances often lead to goals if the goalkeeper is slow to react.

2. Setup

Proper setup is crucial for the flow and intensity of this drill. You will need a standard full-size goal and the surrounding penalty area of a standard football pitch (100-110m x 64-75m).

Equipment Needed:

  • 1 Full-size goal with net
  • 10-15 Footballs
  • 4 Cones or markers (to designate starting positions for shooters)

Player Positions:

  • Goalkeeper (GK): Starts on the goal line, central to the goal.
  • Shooter 1 (10): Positioned on the left side of the penalty arc, approximately 18 meters from the goal.
  • Shooter 2 (9): Positioned centrally on the penalty arc, approximately 20 meters from the goal.
  • Shooter 3 (11): Positioned on the right side of the penalty arc, approximately 18 meters from the goal.
  • Coach/Server: Positioned near the penalty spot with the supply of footballs.

3. Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Initial Set Position: The Goalkeeper (GK) starts in the center of the goal line in a ready stance, eyes focused on the ball.
  2. First Shot: The Coach passes the ball to Shooter 1 (10). Shooter 1 takes a touch and strikes a firm shot toward the goal. The GK must react and attempt the save.
  3. Immediate Recovery: Regardless of whether the first shot is saved, parried, or results in a goal, the GK must immediately get back to their feet and quickly adjust their position to the center of the goal.
  4. Second Shot: As soon as the GK is back in position, the Coach instantly passes a second ball to Shooter 2 (9), who strikes immediately. The GK must execute a second save.
  5. Final Reaction: The GK recovers again. The Coach then passes a third ball to Shooter 3 (11) for a final, often unpredictable shot. The GK must make a final reaction save.
  6. Reset: The drill pauses for 15-20 seconds to allow the GK to reset before repeating the sequence. Rotate shooters to ensure different angles and shot types.

4. Key Coaching Points

  • Set Position: Ensure the goalkeeper is perfectly set before each shot. Feet should be shoulder-width apart, weight slightly forward on the balls of the feet, and hands ready in a neutral position.
  • Quick Recovery: Emphasize the speed of getting back to their feet after a dive. The goalkeeper should use their momentum and core strength to pop back up, rather than slowly pushing off the ground.
  • Footwork and Positioning: Watch the goalkeeper's footwork as they adjust their angle between shots. They must take quick, small steps to stay balanced and square to the ball.
  • Handling vs. Parrying: Encourage the goalkeeper to hold onto the ball whenever possible to eliminate secondary chances. If parrying is necessary, ensure they push the ball wide and away from the danger zone, not back into the center of the penalty area.
  • Mental Resilience: This drill is physically and mentally demanding. Encourage the goalkeeper to maintain focus and aggression, even if they concede a goal on the first or second shot.

5. Common Mistakes

  • Guessing or Anticipating: Goalkeepers often try to guess where the shot is going before it's struck. Remind them to hold their set position and react only to the ball's flight.
  • Poor Recovery Technique: Taking too long to get up or using the wrong arm to push off the ground can cost valuable milliseconds. Correct their recovery mechanics to ensure efficiency.
  • Losing the Angle: In the rush to recover for the second or third shot, goalkeepers may fail to adjust their position relative to the new shooter, leaving too much of the goal exposed.
  • Parrying into Danger: A common error under pressure is simply blocking the ball straight back into the path of oncoming attackers. Reinforce the habit of directing parries wide.

6. Variations & Progressions

  • Add Rebounders: Place two attacking players inside the penalty area. If the goalkeeper parries the ball, these players can attempt to score from the rebound, forcing the GK to make an immediate secondary save.
  • Vary the Delivery: Instead of passes from the coach, have the shooters receive the ball from wide crosses or driven passes, changing the angle and timing of the shots.
  • Movement Before the Shot: Require the goalkeeper to perform a physical task (e.g., touch the post, jump over a small hurdle) immediately before the first shot is taken to simulate recovering from a previous action.

7. Age Adaptations

  • Under 8 - Under 10: Focus primarily on the basic set position and handling. Reduce the distance of the shots (10-12 meters) and use softer, controlled strikes. Limit the sequence to just two shots to avoid fatigue.
  • Under 12 - Under 14: Introduce the full three-shot sequence but maintain a moderate pace. Emphasize proper diving technique and the mechanics of a quick recovery.
  • Under 16 - Open: Run the drill at full match intensity. Shots should be struck with power and precision. Introduce variations like rebounders and complex pre-shot movements to challenge advanced goalkeepers.
