Mastering the Build-Up: Playing Out from the Back Against High Pressure

Equipment Needed

1 full-size goal
1 set of bibs
10 footballs
Cones (for marking zones if needed)

1. Overview

Playing out from the back is a fundamental tactical approach in modern football. This set play is designed to help teams maintain possession, draw the opposition's press, and exploit the space left behind their first line of defense. By utilizing the goalkeeper as an active outfield player and creating numerical superiority (overloads) in the defensive third, teams can safely progress the ball into the midfield. This tactic is best used when the opposition commits to a high press, leaving gaps between their midfield and defensive lines.

2. Setup

Tactical diagram

Pitch Dimensions: Standard 11v11 pitch (100-110m x 64-75m).
Equipment: 1 full-size goal, 1 set of bibs, minimum 10 footballs (placed in the goal for quick restarts).
Player Positions (1-4-3-3 System):

  • GK (1): Central in the penalty area, ready to distribute.
  • CB-L (4) & CB-R (5): Split wide to the edges of the penalty box to stretch the pressing forwards.
  • LB (3) & RB (2): Pushed high and wide, hugging the touchlines near the halfway line.
  • DM (6): Dropping deep into the space between the centre-backs to act as a pivot and create a 3v2 overload against a two-striker press.
  • CM-L (8) & CM-R (10): Positioned in the half-spaces, ready to receive line-breaking passes.
  • LW (11), RW (7), ST (9): High up the pitch, pinning the opposition's defensive line back.

3. Step-by-Step Instructions

Tactical diagram 1

Phase 1: The Initial Setup and Distribution

  1. Trigger: The goalkeeper places the ball down for a goal kick or secures possession in open play.
  2. Shape: The centre-backs immediately split wide to the edges of the 18-yard box. The full-backs push high and wide up the touchlines.
  3. The Pivot: The defensive midfielder (6) drops into the central space, forming a triangle with the two centre-backs.
  4. First Pass: The goalkeeper plays a firm, flat pass to the right centre-back (5).
  5. Drawing the Press: The CB-R takes a positive first touch forward, inviting the opposition winger or striker to press.

Phase 2: Midfield Progression and the Third-Man Run

  1. The Bounce Pass: As the pressure arrives, the CB-R plays a quick, diagonal pass inside to the dropping DM (6).
  2. Breaking the Line: The DM (6) receives on the half-turn and immediately looks for the highest available option. The left central midfielder (8) makes a sharp, angled run into the space vacated by the pressing opposition.
  3. The Third-Man Combination: The DM plays a crisp pass to CM-L (8). Simultaneously, the right central midfielder (10) makes an overlapping or supporting run to offer a quick combination option.
  4. Attacking Transition: With the first line of pressure broken, the CM-L (8) can now drive forward or play a through ball to the striker (9) making a run in behind the defense.

4. Key Coaching Points

  • Body Shape and First Touch: Players must receive the ball on the half-turn (open body shape) so they can see both the ball and the next passing option. The first touch must take them away from pressure.
  • Patience and Provocation: Do not force the forward pass. Centre-backs must be comfortable holding the ball to draw the press. The goal is to provoke the opponent into vacating space.
  • Passing Speed and Accuracy: Passes in the defensive third must be firm and strictly to the correct foot (usually the back foot) to allow for quick ball circulation.
  • Movement off the Ball: Midfielders must constantly scan and adjust their positioning to create passing lanes. Static players are easy to mark.
  • The Goalkeeper as a Sweeper-Keeper: The GK must remain engaged, offering an immediate back-pass option to reset the play if forward progression is blocked.

5. Common Mistakes

  • Playing the Ball Blind: Passing forward without scanning the field first, resulting in interceptions in dangerous areas.
  • Full-backs Too Deep: If the full-backs drop too close to the centre-backs, they compress the space and make it easier for the opposition to press the entire defensive line.
  • Panic Under Pressure: Players rushing their decisions when pressed, leading to inaccurate long balls rather than composed, short combinations.
  • Static Midfield: The DM and CMs failing to make dynamic movements, leaving the centre-backs isolated with no forward passing options.

6. Variations & Progressions

  • Variation 1 (The Full-back Out): If the central areas are congested, the CB plays directly to the high full-back, who then combines with the winger to progress down the flank.
  • Progression 1 (Adding Opposition): Start unopposed to build confidence, then add a passive front three, and finally progress to a full-pressure 11v11 scenario.
  • Progression 2 (Time Limit): Require the team to cross the halfway line within 10 seconds of the goalkeeper's first pass to encourage quick decision-making and verticality.

7. Age Adaptations

  • Under 8 - Under 10: Focus heavily on basic technical skills (first touch, passing accuracy). Keep the shape simple (e.g., a diamond) and play without intense opposition pressure.
  • Under 12 - Under 14: Introduce the concept of the pivot (DM) and the importance of body shape. Begin practicing against passive pressure.
  • Under 16 - Open: Implement the full tactical setup with high-intensity pressing from the opposition. Emphasize third-man runs, scanning, and rapid ball circulation.
