Mastering Centre Pass Variations: The Double Lead Drill

Equipment Needed

Full Netball Court (30.5m x 15.25m)
1x Size 5 Netball
Bibs (Attacking and Defending Colours)

1. Overview

The centre pass is a critical set-piece in Netball, offering a guaranteed opportunity to secure possession and transition into attack. However, predictable centre passes are easily intercepted by well-structured defensive units. This drill focuses on the Double Lead Variation, a tactical maneuver designed to split the defence, create confusion, and ensure the Centre (C) always has a viable first-phase passing option.

By teaching the Wing Attack (WA) and Goal Attack (GA) to coordinate simultaneous, opposing leads, coaches can empower their players to dictate the pace and direction of the attack right from the whistle. This resource provides a step-by-step guide to setting up and executing the double lead, ensuring your team can reliably convert centre passes into scoring opportunities.

2. Setup

Tactical diagram

To effectively run this drill, you will need a full netball court (30.5m x 15.25m) and a standard size 5 netball.

Player Positions

  • Attacking Team: Centre (C), Wing Attack (WA), Goal Attack (GA), Goal Shooter (GS).
  • Defending Team: Wing Defence (WD), Goal Defence (GD), Goal Keeper (GK).

Court Positioning

  • C: Starts inside the 0.9m radius centre circle holding the ball.
  • WA: Positions on the left side of the centre third, close to the transverse line.
  • GA: Positions on the right side of the goal third, just behind the transverse line.
  • GS: Holds space inside the shooting circle.
  • Defenders: WD marks the WA, GD marks the GA, and GK marks the GS.

3. Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps to execute the double lead variation drill effectively:

  1. The Setup: The C stands in the centre circle, ready for the umpire's whistle. The WA and GA establish their starting positions, ensuring they are not stacked on the same side of the court.
  2. The Whistle: On the umpire's whistle, the C pivots to face the attacking third, scanning the court for movement.
  3. The First Lead (Decoy): The WA makes a sharp, explosive diagonal lead towards the right side of the centre third. The goal is to drag the WD out of position and open up space on the left side of the court.
  4. The Second Lead (Target): Simultaneously, the GA makes a hard, driving cut across the transverse line into the space vacated by the WA on the left side of the centre third.
  5. The Decision: The C reads the defensive reaction. If the WD fails to track the WA, the C delivers a flat, fast pass to the WA (Option A). If the WD commits to the WA, the C delivers the pass to the driving GA (Option B).
  6. The Second Phase: Upon receiving the ball, the WA or GA immediately looks to feed the GS holding space in the shooting circle, or resets the play if the feed is heavily contested.

4. Key Coaching Points

To maximize the effectiveness of this drill, focus on the following coaching points:

  • Timing is Everything: The leads from the WA and GA must be simultaneous. If one leads too early, the defence can easily adjust and shut down the play.
  • Explosive Movement: Players must use a strong, explosive first step to gain separation from their defenders. A slow, predictable lead will be easily intercepted.
  • Vision and Decision Making: The C must keep their head up and scan the court before releasing the pass. They must quickly assess which option is open and deliver the ball accurately.
  • Clear Communication: The attacking unit must communicate effectively, using eye contact and subtle body language to signal their intentions.
  • Strong Passing: The pass from the C must be flat, fast, and placed out in front of the leading player to maintain momentum.

5. Common Mistakes

Watch out for these common errors during the drill:

  • Leading Too Early: Players leading before the whistle or before the C is ready to pass, allowing the defence to anticipate the play.
  • Curved Leads: Making rounded, sweeping leads instead of sharp, direct cuts, which gives the defender time to recover and contest the pass.
  • Tunnel Vision: The C locking onto one target and ignoring the alternative option, resulting in a forced pass or an interception.
  • Lack of Defensive Pressure: Defenders not applying adequate pressure during the drill, resulting in an unrealistic scenario that fails to challenge the attacking unit.

6. Variations & Progressions

Keep the drill challenging and engaging with these variations:

  • Add a Defender: Introduce a Centre (C) defender to apply pressure on the pass, forcing the attacking C to pivot and protect the ball before releasing the pass.
  • Constrained Space: Limit the area where the WA and GA can lead, forcing them to use sharper cuts and more precise timing to get open.
  • Second Phase Focus: Extend the drill to include the second phase of the attack, requiring the WA or GA to successfully feed the ball into the shooting circle after receiving the centre pass.

7. Age Adaptations

Tailor the drill to suit the age and skill level of your players:

  • Under 10s: Focus on the basic mechanics of the centre pass. Simplify the drill by having only one player lead at a time, ensuring they understand the concept of moving into space.
  • Under 12s/14s: Introduce the double lead concept, emphasizing timing and communication. Encourage the C to scan the court and make quick decisions.
  • Under 16s/Open: Run the full drill with intense defensive pressure. Focus on explosive movement, precise passing, and seamless transition into the second phase of the attack.
