Scrum Half Passing Accuracy: The Base to Target Drill

Equipment Needed

1 Ruck pad or tackle bag
12-15 Marker cones
Minimum 4 Rugby balls

1. Overview

The scrum half (9) is the heartbeat of any attacking structure in Rugby. Their ability to deliver fast, accurate, and flat passes from the base of the ruck dictates the tempo of the game. This drill is designed to isolate the passing mechanic from the floor, focusing on weight transfer, target acquisition, and execution under controlled pressure. Use this drill during the technical portion of your session to build muscle memory before progressing into live, opposed scenarios. It is highly effective for refining the fundamental connection between the 9, the fly half (10), and the inside centre (12).

2. Setup

Tactical diagram

Proper setup is crucial for maximizing repetitions and maintaining high standards throughout the drill. You will need a 20m x 15m grid on a standard Rugby pitch.

Equipment Needed

  • 1 Ruck pad or tackle bag (to simulate the base of the ruck)
  • 12-15 Marker cones (for grid boundaries and target zones)
  • Minimum 4 Rugby balls

Pitch Setup & Player Positions

  • Create a 20m wide by 15m deep grid using marker cones.
  • Place the ruck pad horizontally in the centre of the grid to represent the hindmost foot of the ruck.
  • Position the Scrum Half (9) at the ruck pad in a ready stance.
  • Position a Feeder (e.g., Number 8 or a coach) directly behind the 9 to roll balls into the "ruck".
  • Set up two target receivers: the Fly Half (10) positioned 5m to the left, and the Inside Centre (12) positioned 5m to the right.
  • Mark 5m target zones with cones for the receivers to run into.

3. Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps to execute the base drill effectively:

  1. The Feed: The feeder rolls a ball to the base of the ruck pad. The 9 must react quickly, adopting a strong, low body position over the ball.
  2. Target Identification: Before touching the ball, the 9 must look up to identify their target (either 10 or 12). The coach can call "Left" or "Right" to dictate the pass direction.
  3. The Sweep: The 9 sweeps the ball from the floor in one fluid motion, keeping their hands fast and close to the ground.
  4. The Pass: Transferring weight from the back foot to the front foot, the 9 delivers a punchy, spinning pass to the designated receiver.
  5. The Reception: The receiver (10 or 12) must time their run to catch the ball at pace within the designated 5m target zone, providing a clear target with their hands.
  6. Reset: The receiver returns the ball to the feeder, and the 9 resets their position for the next repetition. Aim for 10 rapid repetitions per side before rotating players.

4. Key Coaching Points

To ensure players get the most out of this drill, focus on these critical teaching points:

  • Low Body Height: The 9 must stay low over the ball. Hips should be square, and the chest should be over the knees to generate power from the base.
  • Look Before You Pass: Emphasize the "look, sweep, pass" sequence. The 9 must scan the defensive line and identify the target before initiating the passing motion.
  • Weight Transfer: Power comes from the legs. Ensure the 9 is driving through their back leg and stepping towards the target with their front foot.
  • Follow Through: The hands should finish pointing directly at the target after the ball is released. This ensures accuracy and proper spin.
  • Receiver Timing: Receivers must not be static. They need to time their run to hit the ball at pace, providing a "W" target with their hands at chest height.

5. Common Mistakes

Watch out for these frequent errors and correct them immediately:

  • Taking a Step Away: The 9 takes a step away from the ruck before passing, slowing down the delivery and allowing the defense to drift.
  • Standing Up: The 9 pops up before passing, losing power and accuracy. Reinforce staying low throughout the movement.
  • Passing Behind the Runner: The pass forces the receiver to check their run. The 9 must pass to the space in front of the receiver, allowing them to run onto the ball.
  • Scooping the Ball: The 9 lifts the ball before passing rather than sweeping it directly from the floor. This adds an unnecessary fraction of a second to the delivery.

6. Variations & Progressions

Once the base drill is mastered, introduce these progressions to increase difficulty and simulate match conditions.

Progression 1: Live Channel Passing

Introduce a wider attacking structure and a live defender to challenge the 9's decision-making.

  • Expand the grid to a 30m x 20m section.
  • Add an Outside Centre (13) running a wider line and a Support player (7) wrapping around.
  • Place a defender (marked with an X) in the passing channel. The 9 must read the defender's movement and choose whether to hit the flat option (10) or the wider option (12/13).

Progression 2: Fatigue Passing

To simulate late-game scenarios, have the 9 complete a 10m sprint or a down-and-up (burpee) before approaching the base of the ruck to execute the pass. This tests their ability to maintain technique under physical stress.

7. Age Adaptations

Tailor the drill to suit the developmental stage of your players:

  • Under 10s / Minis: Focus entirely on the basic sweeping motion and catching. Reduce the passing distance to 2-3 metres. Do not worry about spin; a standard pop pass is sufficient.
  • Under 14s / Juniors: Introduce the spin pass and emphasize weight transfer. Begin incorporating the "look before you pass" habit. Introduce light, passive defense.
  • Under 16s & Open / Seniors: Execute the drill at full match intensity. Demand perfection in spin, speed, and accuracy. Implement complex progressions with active, disruptive defenders.
