Mastering the Wing Attack (WA) Feeding Patterns: Precision into the Goal Circle

Equipment Needed

2-3 Netballs
Flat markers (optional)
Standard netball court

1. Overview

The Wing Attack (WA) is the primary playmaker in the attacking third, responsible for connecting the mid-court transition to the shooters. This comprehensive drill focuses on developing the WA's ability to read the defense, hit the circle edge at speed, and execute precision feeds into the Goal Shooter (GS) and Goal Attack (GA). By practicing these specific feeding patterns, coaches can ensure their attacking unit operates with seamless timing and lethal accuracy, breaking down even the most structured defensive setups.

2. Setup

Tactical diagram

Court Area: Full court utilizing the centre third and attacking third (30.5m x 15.25m).
Players Required: Minimum of 7 players (C, WA, GA, GS, WD, GD, GK). Can be expanded to include rotating players.
Equipment: 2-3 netballs, standard netball court markings, and optionally, flat markers to designate specific driving zones.

Player Positions:

  • Centre (C): Starts in the centre circle.
  • Wing Attack (WA): Starts on the transverse line, ready to drive into the attacking third.
  • Goal Attack (GA) & Goal Shooter (GS): Positioned inside the goal circle.
  • Defenders (WD, GD, GK): Positioned to apply passive to semi-active pressure initially.

3. Step-by-Step Instructions

Phase 1: The Initial Drive and Connection

Tactical diagram 1

  1. The Centre Pass: The drill initiates with the Centre (C) executing a pass to the Wing Attack (WA), who drives aggressively from the transverse line into the available space in the centre third.
  2. The Lead: The WA must time their lead to receive the ball at full extension, ensuring they maintain momentum toward the attacking third.
  3. Vision and Balance: Upon receiving the ball, the WA must immediately balance, turn fully to face the attacking goal, and scan the circle for the preliminary movements of the GA and GS.

Phase 2: Hitting the Circle Edge (The Pocket)

Tactical diagram 2

  1. The Second Phase Drive: After a quick reset pass back to the C (or a supporting WD), the WA drives hard toward the 'pocket'—the area on the circle edge near the sideline.
  2. Receiving on the Move: The C delivers a crisp pass to the WA as they hit the circle edge. The WA must catch the ball while maintaining body control to avoid stepping offside or into the circle.
  3. The Feed: The WA assesses the movements inside the circle. The primary option is a quick, flat pass to the GA leading across the circle. The secondary option is a lofted pass or bounce pass to the GS holding position under the post.

Phase 3: Linking the Full Pattern

Tactical diagram 3

  1. Continuous Flow: Integrate the entire sequence from a defensive turnover or a backline pass. The ball moves from the defensive third, through the mid-court via the C and WD, culminating in the WA hitting the circle edge.
  2. Decision Making: Introduce active defense. The WA must now read the GD and GK's positioning to choose the correct feeding option—whether it's a direct pass to the holding GS, a drop pass to the driving GA, or resetting the ball if no options are available.

4. Key Coaching Points

  • Timing of the Drive: The WA must not lead too early. They should wait for the C to be balanced and ready to pass before exploding into the space.
  • Hitting the Circle Edge: Encourage the WA to drive right to the edge of the goal circle. Stopping short allows the defense time to recover and intercepts the feed.
  • Vision Before the Catch: The WA should be scanning the goal circle while the ball is in flight toward them, allowing for an immediate, one-touch feed if the opportunity arises.
  • Variety of Feeds: Practice different types of passes (chest, bounce, lob, shoulder) to ensure the WA can adapt to the specific defensive pressure and the positioning of the shooters.
  • Resetting the Play: Teach the WA the importance of patience. If the feed isn't there, they must be comfortable passing back to the C to reset the attacking structure.

5. Common Mistakes

  • Driving Too Flat: The WA drives laterally across the court rather than penetrating toward the goal circle, making the subsequent feed longer and more easily intercepted.
  • Turning the Back to the Shooters: Catching the ball and facing the sideline or defensive end, which delays the feed and allows the defense to set up.
  • Forcing the Pass: Attempting to feed the ball into a heavily defended space rather than utilizing the reset option.
  • Inconsistent Passing Technique: Using a loopy or slow pass when a flat, hard pass is required, giving the defenders time to react.

6. Variations & Progressions

  • Add Defensive Pressure: Transition the defenders (WD, GD, GK) from passive to active. This forces the WA to use fakes, varied pacing, and better decision-making.
  • Time Limits: Introduce a 3-second rule for the WA to release the ball once they hit the circle edge, simulating match-day pressure.
  • Restricted Vision: Place a tall defender with arms raised in front of the WA on the circle edge to practice feeding over or around a tight mark.

7. Age Adaptations

  • Under 10s: Focus purely on the mechanics of the drive and catching the ball cleanly. Use passive defense and emphasize basic chest passes into the circle.
  • Under 12s to Under 14s: Introduce the concept of hitting the 'pocket' and turning to face the goal. Begin incorporating secondary feeding options.
  • Under 16s to Open: Run the drill at match intensity with full defensive pressure. Focus on complex decision-making, split-second timing, and advanced feeding techniques like the drop pass or quick-release lob.
