The Ultimate 5-on-5 Box-Out and Rebound Pursuit Drill

Equipment Needed

1 Basketball
Standard half-court (28m x 15m)
Rebounding lid/bubble (optional)
Blocking pads (optional)

1. Overview

Rebounding is often the deciding factor in close basketball games. The 5-on-5 Box-Out and Rebound Pursuit Drill is designed to bridge the gap between static rebounding lines and live-game chaos. It teaches defensive players to instantly locate their assignment, establish physical contact (the "hit"), seal the offensive player away from the basket, and aggressively pursue the basketball at its highest point.

Use this drill when your team is struggling to finish defensive possessions or when you need to reinforce the habit of "hitting first" rather than simply turning to watch the flight of the ball.

2. Setup

This drill requires a standard half-court setup (28m x 15m FIBA dimensions) and involves all ten players on the floor to simulate real-game spacing and traffic.

  • Equipment Needed: 1 basketball, standard half-court, optional blocking pads for coaches.
  • Player Positions:
    • 5 Offensive players (1–5) positioned around the perimeter and high post.
    • 5 Defensive players (X1–X5) matched up against the offense, positioned inside the three-point arc.
  • Coach Position: The coach stands at the top of the key or on the wing with the basketball.

3. Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Initial Alignment: The coach begins with the basketball at the top of the key. The offense (Players 1–5) spaces the floor in a standard 5-out or 4-out 1-in alignment. The defense (X1–X5) assumes a standard man-to-man defensive stance.
  2. The Trigger: The coach initiates the drill by taking a deliberate, visible shot attempt.
  3. Locate and Hit: The instant the ball leaves the coach's hand, all five defensive players must yell "Shot!" and immediately locate their assigned offensive player. They must close the distance and make physical contact using their forearm or chest.
  4. The Pivot and Seal: After the initial contact, the defender pivots to put their hips and backside into the offensive player's thighs, establishing a wide, low base with arms raised at shoulder level.
  5. Pursuit: Once the seal is established, the defender tracks the flight of the ball, releases from the box-out, and explodes upward to secure the rebound with two hands.
  6. The Outlet: Upon securing the rebound, the defensive player pivots to the outside and delivers a crisp outlet pass to a designated coach or point guard at the hash mark.

4. Key Coaching Points

  • Hit First, Look Second: Make contact with the offensive player before looking up at the rim.
  • Low and Wide Base: Drop hips and widen stance when establishing the seal.
  • Arms Up and Active: Keep elbows wide to prevent offensive swim moves.
  • Rebound at the Peak: Snatch the ball at the highest point with two hands.

5. Common Mistakes

  • Turning to Watch the Ball: Failing to locate the offensive player first.
  • Boxing Out Under the Rim: Getting pushed too deep, eliminating pursuit space.
  • Rebounding with One Hand: Failing to secure the ball strongly in traffic.

6. Variations & Progressions

  • Disadvantage Rebounding: 4 defenders vs. 5 offensive players forces communication.
  • Live Play: Offense passes for 5–10 seconds before a live shot.
  • Bubble Lid: Use a rim lid to guarantee a rebounding opportunity every rep.

7. Age Adaptations

  • Under 10 / Under 12: Focus on the "Hit First" concept only; use lighter balls.
  • Under 14 / Under 16: Introduce offensive swim moves; demand a perfect outlet pass.
  • Open / Advanced: Incorporate Disadvantage Rebounding and demand peak-jump aggression.
