GK Body Positioning & Intercept Drill

Equipment Needed

2-3 netballs
Netball court
Bibs (GK, GS, GA, WA)
Cones (optional)

1. Overview

This drill focuses on developing the Goal Keeper's (GK) ability to maintain an optimal body angle, read the play, and execute explosive intercepts. A strong GK must dictate the space in the goal circle, forcing the Goal Shooter (GS) into less desirable positions while remaining ready to attack the ball. By practicing shadow positioning and timing the drive for an intercept, coaches can help defenders transition from passive marking to active, ball-winning defense.

Use this drill during the defensive focus of your training session, particularly when working on circle defense and reading the incoming feed.

2. Setup

Tactical diagram

  • Court Area: Defensive third of the netball court (specifically around the goal circle).
  • Players Required: Minimum of 4 players (1 GK, 1 GS, 1 GA, 1 WA) plus 1 Coach/Feeder.
  • Equipment: 2-3 netballs, standard court markings (30.5m x 15.25m with a 4.9m radius goal circle), and optional cones to mark the intercept zones.

Starting Positions

  • GK: Positioned inside the goal circle, maintaining a 45-degree angle to see both the GS and the ball carrier.
  • GS: Positioned at the top of the goal circle or holding space near the post.
  • GA & WA: Positioned outside the goal circle to act as feeders and secondary attacking options.
  • Coach: Positioned on the sideline or transverse line to observe and provide feedback.

3. Step-by-Step Instructions

Tactical diagram

Phase 1: Shadow Positioning (Warm-up)

  1. Set the Stance: The GK starts on the GS, establishing a 45-degree body angle. The GK should be on the toes, knees slightly bent, with arms ready to react.
  2. Shadow Movement: The GS makes small, sharp movements within the circle. The GK must shadow these movements, staying goal-side and maintaining the 45-degree angle without fully committing to an intercept.
  3. Vision Check: The Coach holds a ball on the transverse line and randomly raises or lowers it. The GK must call out the ball's position while still shadowing the GS, ensuring they are tracking both the player and the ball.

Phase 2: The Intercept Read

  1. Ball Introduction: The Coach passes the ball to the WA or GA outside the circle.
  2. Read the Play: As the ball travels to the attacker, the GK must adjust their body angle to maintain vision of the new ball carrier and the GS.
  3. The Setup Pass: The attacker (WA/GA) looks to feed the GS. The GK must anticipate the pass trajectory based on the attacker's body language and the GS's movement.
  4. The Intercept: As the ball leaves the attacker's hands, the GK explodes from their toes, driving forward at an angle to intercept the ball before it reaches the GS. The GK must land cleanly and balance.

Phase 3: Live Play Progression

  1. Dynamic Attack: Introduce a live scenario where the WA, GA, and GS work together to score.
  2. Defensive Rotation: The GK must continuously adjust positioning as the ball moves around the circle edge.
  3. Commitment: The GK must decide when to hold position (shadow) and when to commit to the intercept. Reward successful intercepts and correct timing errors.

4. Key Coaching Points

Tactical diagram

  • 45-Degree Angle: The GK must consistently maintain a body angle that allows peripheral vision of both the GS and the ball carrier. Turning the back completely to either is a critical error.
  • Stay on the Toes: Explosive movement requires the GK to be on the balls of their feet. Flat-footed defenders cannot react quickly enough to intercept.
  • Attack the Ball: When committing to an intercept, the GK must drive aggressively toward the ball, taking it at the highest possible point, rather than waiting for it to arrive.
  • Clean Footwork: Emphasize landing on the outside foot after an intercept to maintain balance and avoid contact penalties.
  • Recovery: If the intercept is missed, the GK must immediately recover to a goal-side defensive position to contest the shot.

5. Common Mistakes

Tactical diagram

  • Ball Watching: The GK focuses entirely on the ball and loses track of the GS's movement, allowing easy baseline drives.
  • Flat-Footed Stance: The GK stands flat-footed, resulting in a delayed reaction time when the pass is released.
  • Over-Committing Early: The GK moves before the ball is released, allowing the attacker to easily fake the pass and feed the GS in the open space.
  • Poor Body Angle: The GK stands square to the GS or the ball, completely losing vision of the other element.

6. Variations & Progressions

Tactical diagram

  • Add a Goal Defence (GD): Introduce a GD to work in tandem with the GK, practicing switches and double-teaming the GS to force a specific pass.
  • Restricted Vision: Have the GK start facing away from the play. On the Coach's whistle, the GK must turn, locate the ball and the GS, and react instantly to the incoming pass.
  • Continuous Feed: The Coach rapidly feeds multiple balls to the attackers, forcing the GK to intercept, recover, and immediately set up for the next play without rest.

7. Age Adaptations

Tactical diagram

  • Under 10s / Under 12s: Focus heavily on the basic 45-degree stance and shadowing without the ball. Introduce slow, predictable lobs for intercept practice to build confidence.
  • Under 14s / Under 16s: Increase the speed of the passes and the intensity of the GS's movement. Emphasize explosive first steps and clean landings.
  • Open / Advanced: Run the drill at match intensity. Introduce complex attacking plays (e.g., screens, splits) that the GK must read and counter.
