Mastering the Low Block: Post Moves and Footwork Progression

Equipment Needed

2 Basketballs
1 Basket
Contact pads (optional)

1. Overview

The 'Mastering the Low Block' drill is designed to build foundational post-play skills for interior players. It focuses on establishing deep post position, securing the entry pass, and executing fundamental scoring moves—specifically the drop step and the up-and-under counter. This drill is essential for developing a reliable inside scoring threat, teaching players how to read the defender's positioning and react with the appropriate footwork. By isolating these movements, coaches can ensure players develop the muscle memory required to score efficiently in crowded paint areas during live game situations.

2. Setup

Court Dimensions: Standard FIBA Half-Court (28m x 15m)

Equipment Needed:

  • 2 Basketballs
  • 1 Basket
  • Optional: Contact pads for coaches to simulate defensive pressure

Player Positions:

  • Player 5 (Post Player): Starts at the left low block, approximately 1.5m from the baseline.
  • Player 1 (Feeder/Point Guard): Starts at the top of the key, approximately 6m from the basket.
  • Player X5 (Defender/Coach): Starts directly behind Player 5 at the left low block.
  • Player 4 (Next Post Player): Waits at the right low block to rotate in.

3. Step-by-Step Instructions

Phase 1: Post Entry & Positioning

  1. Establish Position: Player 5 starts at the left low block, getting wide and low, using their forearm and lower body to seal off the defender (X5).
  2. Target Hand: Player 5 must provide a clear target hand away from the defender to call for the ball.
  3. The Entry Pass: Player 1 executes a crisp, two-handed overhead or bounce pass to Player 5's target hand.
  4. The Catch: Player 5 catches the ball with two hands, immediately chinning the ball to protect it from guards digging down.

Phase 2: The Drop Step

  1. Read the Defense: Upon catching the ball, Player 5 feels the defender leaning toward the high side (middle of the floor).
  2. The Pivot: Player 5 establishes their inside foot (right foot) as the pivot foot.
  3. The Drop: Player 5 aggressively swings their outside foot (left foot) backward toward the baseline, dropping their shoulder to seal the defender on their back.
  4. The Finish: Keeping the ball high, Player 5 takes one power dribble (optional, depending on distance) and explodes up for a strong finish off the glass.

Phase 3: The Up-and-Under Counter

  1. The Setup: Player 5 executes the same initial catch and drop step motion, but this time the defender (X5) anticipates the move and cuts off the baseline angle.
  2. The Fake: Player 5 immediately stops their baseline momentum and executes a hard shot fake, showing the ball and eyes to the rim to lift the defender.
  3. The Step-Through: As the defender leaves their feet or raises their center of gravity, Player 5 keeps their pivot foot (right foot) planted and steps through with their left foot toward the middle of the paint.
  4. The Finish: Player 5 finishes with a soft hook or layup on the other side of the rim, protecting the ball with their body.

4. Key Coaching Points

  • Get Wide and Low: Post players must play with a wide base. A high center of gravity makes it easy for defenders to push them off the block.
  • Chin the Ball: Upon catching the entry pass, the ball must immediately go under the chin with elbows out to prevent smaller guards from stripping it.
  • Read the Defense Before Moving: Players must 'feel' where the defender is leaning before making their move. If the defender plays high, drop step baseline. If the defender plays low, turn to the middle.
  • Sell the Fake: The up-and-under only works if the initial shot fake is believable. Eyes must go to the rim, and the ball must be shown high.
  • Explosive First Step: The drop step must cover ground quickly to seal the defender on the hip.

5. Common Mistakes

  • Catching the Ball Flat-Footed: Players often wait for the ball rather than meeting the pass, allowing defenders to step around and steal it.
  • Traveling on the Drop Step: Players frequently lift their pivot foot before releasing the ball on the power dribble, resulting in a traveling violation.
  • Bringing the Ball Down: After the catch or during the move, dropping the ball below the waist exposes it to smaller, quicker defenders who will strip it.
  • Rushing the Move: Players often decide what move they are going to make before catching the ball, ignoring the defender's actual positioning.

6. Variations & Progressions

  • Add Live Defense: Start with dummy defense (coach with a pad), then progress to 50% live, and finally 100% live 1-on-1 in the post.
  • Middle Drive Progression: Add a progression where the defender overplays the baseline, forcing the post player to execute a middle jump hook or face-up drive.
  • Pass Out (Kick-Out): Introduce a double-team scenario where a guard digs down, forcing the post player to recognize the trap and execute a kick-out pass to the perimeter.

7. Age Adaptations

  • Under 10s: Focus purely on the footwork without a ball first. Use spots on the floor to teach the pivot and drop step. Emphasize catching with two hands.
  • Under 12s - Under 14s: Introduce dummy defense to help them understand 'feeling' the defender. Focus heavily on not traveling and keeping the ball high.
  • Under 16s - Open: Incorporate full live reads. The defender can choose to play high, low, or back away, forcing the offensive player to read and react instantly with the correct move (drop step, jump hook, or face-up).
