The Three-Stage Attacking Play: From Defensive Turnover to Goal

Equipment Needed

1 netball
Full court
Positional bibs (14)

1. Overview

This set play provides a structured framework for transitioning the ball from a defensive turnover in your own goal third, through the middle third, and into a high-percentage shooting position. It is designed to create width, utilize quick changes of direction, and exploit spaces left by retreating defenders. Use this play when your team secures an interception or rebound and needs a reliable, structured method to advance the ball against a set or scrambling defence.

2. Setup

Tactical diagram

  • Equipment Needed: 1 netball, full court (30.5m x 15.25m), positional bibs for all 14 players (7 attackers, 7 defenders).
  • Court Setup: Full court setup with standard markings.
  • Player Positions: Starting positions are dynamic based on the location of the turnover, but typically involve the Goal Keeper (GK) or Goal Defence (GD) initiating the play from the defensive third.

3. Step-by-Step Instructions

Stage 1: Defensive Turnover & First Outlet

Tactical diagram 1

  1. The Turnover: The GK or GD secures possession in the defensive goal circle (e.g., via a rebound or interception).
  2. The First Outlet: The GD immediately drives wide towards the sideline to offer a clear, uncontested pass from the GK. This clears the central corridor and stretches the opposition's defensive setup.
  3. The Push Forward: Simultaneously, the Wing Defence (WD) pushes forward into the middle third, offering a secondary option or preparing for the next phase of the transition.

Stage 2: Transition Through the Middle Third

Tactical diagram 2

  1. The Switch: The GD passes to the WD, who has positioned themselves on the right side of the middle third. This forces the opposition to shift their defensive focus.
  2. The Central Drive: The Centre (C) drives into the central space to receive a quick pass from the WD. The C must time their run to arrive at the ball at pace, maintaining the momentum of the attack.
  3. The Diagonal Cut: As the C receives the ball, the Wing Attack (WA) makes a sharp, diagonal cut from the left side of the middle third, moving behind their defender to receive the next pass near the attacking transverse line.

Stage 3: Attacking Third Entry & Goal Circle Feed

Tactical diagram 3

  1. The Baseline Drive: The WA, upon receiving the ball, drives hard towards the goal circle edge, specifically targeting the baseline to draw the defenders deep.
  2. The Front Lead: The Goal Attack (GA) leads to the front of the goal circle, offering a short, safe passing option and drawing the Goal Defence (GD) out of position.
  3. The Back-Post Hold: The Goal Shooter (GS) initially holds their position against the Goal Keeper (GK), then makes a sudden lead to the back post, exploiting the space created by the GA's movement.
  4. The Feed: The WA delivers a precise, weighted pass into the circle, either to the GA at the front or the GS at the back post, depending on the defensive positioning.

4. Key Coaching Points

  • Vision and Timing: Players must look down the court before passing. Timing the leads is crucial; players should only drive when the ball carrier is ready to release the pass.
  • Width and Depth: Utilize the full width of the court during the transition (Stage 2) to stretch the defence and create passing lanes.
  • Strong First Outlet: The initial pass out of defence must be strong and accurate. A weak pass allows the opposition to reset their defensive structure.
  • Decisive Feeding: The final feed into the goal circle must be decisive and placed away from the defender. Use bounce passes or high, looping passes depending on the GS's positioning.
  • Communication: Constant communication is vital, especially during the chaotic moments immediately following a turnover.

5. Common Mistakes

  • Crowding the Ball: Players making leads into the same space, causing congestion and making it easy for defenders to intercept.
  • Holding the Ball Too Long: Failing to release the ball within the 3-second rule, allowing the defence to recover and apply pressure.
  • Ignoring the Switch: Forcing the ball down one side of the court instead of utilizing the C or WD to switch the point of attack.
  • Static Holding: Shooters holding their position for too long without moving, making them easy targets for defenders to block.

6. Variations & Progressions

  • Progression 1: Add Defensive Pressure: Start the drill with passive defenders, then gradually increase the intensity to full, match-like pressure.
  • Progression 2: Time Limit: Challenge the attacking team to move the ball from the defensive third to a shot on goal within a specific timeframe (e.g., 10 seconds).
  • Variation 1: The Long Bomb: If the opposition's defence is completely out of position, the GD or WD can look for a long, direct pass to the WA or GA in the attacking third, bypassing the middle third entirely.
  • Variation 2: The Reset: If the forward options are blocked, the attacking team should be comfortable passing backwards to the GD or GK to reset the play and maintain possession.

7. Age Adaptations

  • Under 10s: Focus on the basic mechanics of passing and catching. Simplify the play to just two stages (outlet and feed). Use a smaller court or lower hoops if necessary.
  • Under 12s/14s: Introduce the concept of switching play and using the full width of the court. Emphasize timing and the importance of the first outlet pass.
  • Under 16s/Open: Implement the full three-stage play with complex variations and full defensive pressure. Focus on split-second decision-making and precise execution.
